What is a Flight Cancellation?

Flight cancellation is when the plane fails to leave the airport or when the flight is interrupted en route. When this happens, the airline has breached its contract with you and you can claim your money or alternative transport. It can be a domestic or international flight.

Passengers are always entitled to choose automatic financial compensation, ticket reimbursement, or re-routing. 

The refund must be within seven days and at the full cost of the ticket for the part of the journey that was cancelled. The refund can be made in cash, by electronic bank transfer, bank transfer, cheque or, subject to passenger agreement, travel vouchers or other services.

The airline can also take you to your final destination under similar transport conditions as quickly as possible.

Or, finally, the journey to the final destination, under similar transport conditions, at a later date at the passenger’s choosing if there is seat availability.

If an alternative flight is offered to an airport other than the intended destination, the carrier must cover the cost of transporting the passenger to the originally intended airport or another nearby place agreed with the passenger.

Compensation for Flight Cancellations

If your flight has been cancelled, the compensation is as follows:

  • From 0 to 1,500 Km – You are entitled to €250.

  • From 1,500 Km to 3,500 Km- You are entitled to €400.

  • More than 3,500 Km – You are entitled to €600.

 

What are my rights when my flight is cancelled?

You have five essential rights when your flight is cancelled: 

The airline must provide information

The airline must offer you material assistance and support

You can either be reimbursed or select alternative transport

The airline must cover the expenses incurred when transferring you to another airport

You have the right to compensation, depending on flight’s distance

The airline must provide reimbursement or re-routing. They must also provide access to care, such as food and drink, while you wait after cancellation as well as  accommodation and transport between your accommodation and the airport if you have to stay one or more nights.

Under this circumstance, the carrier must offer the passenger the choice between a refund, re-routing as soon as possible and re-routing on another date.

Covid-19 has affected how quickly flights can be re-routed so passengers are advised to take refund options or later transportation at a later date.

If you booked your tickets individually, only the cancelled leg of the journey will be refunded.

First, you must file a complaint with the airline. If the airline does not respond within one month or if the response is not satisfactory, you can file a complaint completely free of charge with the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (AESA) and appeal to the courts as an individual if you consider that your rights have been violated.

You don’t need to file a claim with the company at the same time as the cancellation. The deadline in Spain is five years.

If your booked a return flight and the outbound flight was cancelled, the airline must reimburse both the outbound and return flight, alternative transport as soon as possible for the outward flight or offer alternative transport on another date at the passenger’s convenience for the outward flight.

If only the return flight is cancelled, the choices outlined above are only offered on the return flight.
