What is a Student Visa? ?

This residence permit is for non-EU citizens who have been admitted to a higher education establishment in Greece. In order to attend a full-time course in Greece, the applicant must apply prior to their arrival in Greece for a long-term visa, which is called Visa D.

This visa is not exclusively for students and is also used for the following activities:

  • Performing research

  • Receiving training

  • Completing a course or program

  • Studying in Greece

How to obtain a Student Visa in Greece?

In order to obtain a residence permit as a student in Greece there are two steps which need to be followed. The applicant should apply for a long-term entry visa, known as Visa D, at the Greek Consulate Authority in their country of residence. This issue is usually issued within 10 days. Once in Greece, the applicant needs to apply for residence permit.

The application requires proof the applicant is enroled at an educational institution and has paid their fees. Some prospective students will need to meet a minimum standard of spoken Greek and may possibly need to provide additional documents like a travel and medical certificates. If the applicant is younger than 18 years old, they’ll need parental consent. 

The visa also requires the student to have sufficient financial means to support themselves, which is €400 a month for an individual

Before entering Greece, the applicant must collect all their required documents, such as certificates, proof that they sufficiently support themselves, background checks. Some applicants will also need to have a minimum understanding of the Greek language.

ENTRY VISA:

Prior to entering Greece, the appliant must apply in person at the Greek Consulate Authority in their country of residence for a long-term entry visa, known as Visa D. The process also involves an interview.

The visa is usually issued within 10 days from the day of application and is valid for a year. Once the applicant has entered Greece, they must then proceed and apply for the residence permit by submitting the following information.

  • A certificate proving registration and payment of fees at the respective education establishment
  • Proof that they have sufficient financial resources to meet their study and subsistence costs. This is at least €400 a month and can be proved with a deposit account, a bank transfer or a scholarship. Proof of salary is also acceptable if the student is employed part-time and the residence permit is being renewed.
  • Parental consent if the applicant is under 18 years old.
  • If course requires sufficient knowledge of the Greek language as a prerequisite for their registration, the applicant will be assessed by the educational institution and issued with a certificate. This certificate must be given to the Greek Consular Authority.
  • A copy of their criminal record, medical and travel certificates.

The residence permit is issued for the whole duration of the studies. The applicant must also provide their biometric data, such as fingerprints, for the card to be issued. The permit is usually issued within one to two months from the date of application, but the applicant can enter and exit the country until the final card is issued.

If the applicant is younger than 18 years old, they’ll need parental consent.
