What is a NIE and why is one needed in Spain?
The NIE – or more formally the ‘Número de identificación de extranjero’ –  is a unique ID Number that enables the Spanish Authorities to be able to identify you.
Its purpose is to assign an identity to any foreigner/non-Spanish citizen, resident or non-resident, who operates in Spain for social, economic, or professional reasons. Â Both EU citizens and non-EU citizens get issued a NIE.
You will need a NIE number to file taxes, buy property, establish a business, and to open a bank account.
Also, if you plan on being a director or a shareholder of a company in Spain, you will need a NIE. Getting your NIE is the first step in forming a company and you will need your NIE along with your passport number in every document you sign.
Keep in mind that your NIE in Spain is not a fiscal residency identification. You can have a Spanish NIE and be a fiscal resident in another country.
What do I have to do in order to get a NIE in Spain?
In order to properly fill out the NIE application, you will need to:
- State your marital status
- Obtain a notarized document showing why you need a NIE
- Provide a copy of your whole passport and a photo
- Pay a fee of approximately 12 euros.
After completing your application, you can submit it to the Consular Post nearest to where you reside. You can also apply for the NIE in immigration offices or police stations in Spain, or have us do it for you.
The application must include a copy of the biographical page of your passport and proof of your social, economic, or professional reason justifying the purpose of your application.
Can Lexidy help me obtain a NIE number?
Yes! Let us know if you plan on purchasing property, renting an apartment or realizing any other activity in Spain and it will be our pleasure to assist you with the obtainment of your NIE number.
If you wish for us to obtain the NIE for you, without you having to come to Spain for it, we can draft a power of attorney (multi-lingual), where we only need to attach a copy of your passport, sign it at a Notary-Public’s office (or other official office) in your country of residence and have it legalized.
